Pink Topstitched Wingbacks

These were for a Designer client. He wanted the casual look of slipcovers for these chairs. At first, I was sad to cover up the beautiful wood and nailhead trim---but then when they were finished I saw his vision, like I always do.

Wingback--BEFORE

 Wingback--AFTER- he never does piping, it's almost always french welt (flat flange with  pleats at corners) or topstitched. I loved the clean look of it.

I topstitched EVERY seam using my topstitching foot.

1.5" blind hem on the skirt--it was a thicker beautiful weight fabric.

I loved the chairs with a skirt on them.

SIDE NOTE--

#1--I have been thinking about writing an "advanced slipcovering tips" guide for quite awhile. I wrote up the outline during spring break on our drive to Moab, and I started taking pics this week. I am finally feeling balanced and not CRAZY, so it's a good time to start this HUGE project right?

 I will go over wing backs, matching, skirt options, telephone arms, english rolled arms, waterfall skirt, and MUCH more.

#3--- I came across these old pics the other day of my old work room! I have never showed them before, because I was too embarrassed and thought they looked very UNPROFESSIONAL.

cramped, bad lighting, in the basement...need I say more?

I am SO Happy to be out of this space! Funny how excited I was moving into it 9 yrs ago. I definitely outgrew it! And yes, I had to haul all the furniture and cushions through the house and down the stairs into the basement.

 MY NEW WORK STUDIO---100% worth the pain and $ of the remodel. (we converted our garage). Now I can load straight from the driveway through the french doors. Happy day--- I like to save my workouts for running not carrying chairs!

 #4-- Went to the cabin last weekend to finish up the railroad tie stairs and get the water turned back on after the winter.  Logan learned how to use the chainsaw for the first time! I was a proud mama tearing up, watching my boy become a man. Love to watch Heber teaching the boys man stuff, melts my heart and makes me fall in love with him even more! Love that man!

My Office

Well I barely made into the finals of the Sewing contest! Yea! So here's my project for the finals! Please click here to vote!

This room was originally used as a sewing room before we had kids, then it was a nursery for my first baby, then a toddlers bedroom, then a storage room for my work stuff. Now that my new work studio is done, I needed to find a new purpose for this room. My sister in law suggested making it an office. I loved the idea...somewhere to put all the papers, bills, books, craft supplies, etc.

Chair---BEFORE- I picked up this chair from the free pile behind my favorite thrift store in Heber, Ut.  The ottoman I had kicking around. I just picked up the floor lamp from the SLC flea Market last weekend! Camille gave me the black lamp shade--which was a little too fancy for the room, so I slipcovered that too.

AFTER---gray houndstooth on chair. I wanted to keep the detail on the inside back, so I highlighted it with piping.

I debated forever on the pillow!!!! I ended up making it reversible with my two favorite options. Pieced on the front with mustard piping, and chevron on back.

I got my curtain fabric from www.fabric.com

I went with a self lined 5.5" skirt with kick pleats on corners. I liked the shorter skirt on this chair.

I went with a black fabric with white chenille textured dots...to pull out the black in the curtains.

I picked up some accessories at the local thrift stores. I love all the industrial stuff.

I slipcovered the chevron lampshade on the desk. I picked up both set of bookshelves from the thrift store as well as the mirror.

I got the desk off KSL.com, I like rustic mixed with industrial. I wanted to bring some dark wood into the space.

Newsboy Hat

I was inspired to make this hat after I tried to crochet a hat at a church activity. It was taking forever and my hand hurt from holding the crochet hook....and it looked REALLY bad! I thought I could make a hat out of fabric and sew it in 1/4 of the time. I started drafting the pattern, and through trial and error, I was able to get it right. The hat consists of 6 triangle pieces, brim, and band. I lined it, so no seams show. All the seams are topstitched, and there's elastic at the back for a better fit (which is enclosed between the lining and outside fabric). This hat can be fully reversible.

Drop Cloth Chair

My client wanted to redo her chenille chair because the nap was wearing off and looked worn. She chose to use drop cloth.

 Chair--AFTER--still love those english rolled arms, they are my favorite.

All the other pieces in her room had exposed legs, so we decided to mix it up and put a skirt on the chair.

A few weeks ago we headed to Moab for spring break and camped for 3 nights, and hiked in Arches National Park. Our boys are growing up...no one needed to be carried for the first time EVER!!!!

This past weekend, I headed to Los Angeles with my sister and Camille. We had a girls weekend and went to the Rose Bowl Flea Market. It was super cool! Tons of stuff and tons of people. We spent the weekend shopping, riding bikes, laughing, eating ding dongs in bed, hot tubbing, running (if a 1 mile run counts), and hanging out on the beach.

MY PROJECT!

My client got this hand me down chair from her husbands aunt. It's been sitting in the corner of her basement.

    

Chair--BEFORE--a bit dated and stained.

Chair--AFTER-- She picked this great orange zebra fabric and some turquoise fabric for pillows.

We thought it would be best to keep the legs showing...since the fabric felt more modern and funky. She may paint the legs turquoise. I loved that they had the little brass caps on them.

 The chair didn't allow for tuck-ins inside the wing...so I decided to run piping down that seam to finish it off.

Since my client was worried about the slipcover shifting and showing underneath--especially since we weren't doing a skirt. I did a 1.5" casing around the base and cinched it tight with a cord and tied it around the back leg. This way it won't go anywhere, which is good because the original fabric is slippery.
